The French worker jacket has been worn by workers for over a century. The fit is loose and slightly boxy, originally to be worn as a protective layer over other garments. Button fastenings at the front and at the cuffs, which made it easier when the sleeves needed to be rolled up during the hardest chores. The hickory stripe was also originally made for hard work and is strongly associated with railroad workers. The fabric was rugged and the stripes meant that dirt and oil stains didn't show as easily.
