Inspired by the old French workers' jackets worn by farmers as well as railway workers and builders. The jacket began to appear in the late 19th century and was perfect as a work garment for most physical chores. The large pockets could hold both tools and tobacco and the buttons at the cuffs made it easier when it was time to roll up the sleeves.
